Occupation, practice, or vocation requiring mastery of a complex set of knowledge and skills through formal education and/or practical experience. Every organized profession (accounting, law, medicine, nursing, medical laboratory technologist etc.) is governed by its respective professional body.

Self-Regulation is generally understood to mean that the profession regulates itself rather the having regulation done by a government department or agency. The regulating body is governed by a Board or Council which is mostly composed of Members of the profession elected by their peers, though the government appoints some additional persons including non-Members.

Definition: control by oneself or itself, as in an economy, business organization, etc., especially such control as exercised independently of governmental supervision, laws, or the like.

The SSMLT will protect the public by establishing entrance requirements and standards which those who wish to practise as a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) in Saskatchewan. These include entrance certification/education, minimum number of hours of practised, Continuing Education (CE) requirements as well as procedures and processes for complaints and discipline.

The regulatory body standard is similar to a court of law which is "innocent until proven guilty." The investigation and discipline process is set out in the MLT Act and Bylaws. The SSMLT has a "Counselling and Investigation" committee responsible for investigating complaints. Should they find the allegations are substantiated the committee may take action. One of the actions, is to refer the matter to the "Discipline" committee, which then must hold a formal hearing to determine the case.

You may still maintain your registration as non-practicing or retired. Prior to returning to practicing you must ensure that you meet the Continuing Education and Practise Hours requirements set out to be a Practicing member. For information, click here .
