Areas of Practice

SSMLT licenses Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLTs) in the following practice areas:
  • MLT General (includes all of Chemistry, Hematology, Transfusions, Microbiology, and Histology)
  • Diagnostic Cytology (includes Cytology and Histology)
  • Clinical Genetics

License Requirements

Any person working as a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) in Saskatchewan must have a current valid license with SSMLT. The SSMLT license year is December 1-November 30.  It is the member's responsibility to ensure they renew their license each year prior to expiration.

Categories of License

Practicing Member

All applicants within this category must have successfully completed the Canadian MLT certification examination issued by Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) and be working in another Canadian jurisdiction or be a New Graduate within 24 months with no MLT work experience.

Temporary Practicing member - working under supervision

A temporary practicing licence- working under supervision membership may be issued for a limited time frame, to a:

     - New graduate who has graduated from a Canadian accredited MLT program within the previous 24 months; or
     - A graduate of a SSMLT approved Canadian MLT Bridging program within the previous 24 months; or
     - Internationally educated MLT that has completed all requirements of the CSMLS Prior Learning assessment

To be eligible for this license category the applicant will have no MLT work experience in Canada and must be either eligible to write the CSMLS certification exam (first attempt) or have written the CSMLS certification exam (first attempt) and is awaiting results.

Membership

SSMLT membership is voluntary and may be issued to SSMLT members that are not currently working. Membership categories have limited privileges and members of these categories are not eligible to work as a MLT in Saskatchewan. Should a member wish to work as a MLT in Saskatchewan they must meet all terms and conditions for a practicing license and then select ‘Upgrade to Practicing’ from the member portal, pay the applicable fees.


Categories of Membership


Non- Practicing

Non-practicing membership is available to a SSMLT member has met the registration requirements in section 7 of the regulatory bylaws and chooses not to practice as a Medical Laboratory Technologist.

Non-practicing membership entitles the person to the following privileges:

  • attending at all Annual and Special Meetings;
  • using the title of “medical laboratory technologist” or “registered medical laboratory technologist” as described in section 20 of the Act; and
  • receiving the publications of the SSMLT.

Note: Members may become non-practicing on a temporary basis. Example: Maternity leave that falls in conjunction with annual membership year. Non-practicing members on temporary leave must ensure Professional Liability Coverage (PLI) is maintained.

Retired

Retired membership is available to a person who was a practicing member in good standing of the SSMLT at the time of retirement.

Retired membership entitles the person to the following privileges:

  • attending all Annual or Special Meetings;
  • using the title of “medical laboratory technologist” or “registered medical laboratory technologist” as described in section 20 of the Act; and
  • receiving the publications of the SSMLT.

Honorary

Council may extend Honorary membership to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the profession of medical laboratory technology or to the SSMLT.

Honorary membership entitles the person to the following privileges:

  • attending all Annual or Special Meetings; and
  • receiving the publications of the SSMLT.
