Governance

The SSMLT Council is the organization’s governing body and uses a complimentary model to function. The Council is made up of members of the public, who are appointed by the provincial government, and eligible practicing SSMLT members of who are elected from the membership. The Council duties include business oversight, strategic planning, decision-making and financial planning. Once elected to Council, MLTs are not accountable to the members, but instead, to protecting the public and to the legislation and bylaws governing the Society.

SSMLT Governance Hierarchy

Under Saskatchewan’s legislative framework, public accountability of regulated health professions is provided for in the following manner:

  • government appoints public members to the council of the regulatory body to represent the interests of the general public;
  • regulatory bylaws require the review and approval of the Minister of Health;
  • decisions made through the regulatory body’s discipline process may be appealed to the courts; and
  • regulatory bodies are required to submit an annual register and report to the Minister.

QUALIFICATIONS/REGISTRATION

SSMLT assesses the qualifications of all new applicants to become a licensed medical laboratory technologist. MLTs must have completed an accredited education program or equivalent as approved by Council and must successfully challenge the national certification examination to be eligible to work as a practicing MLT in Saskatchewan.
As self-regulated healthcare practitioners, members are required to use their knowledge, skills, and judgment in their work.

CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION

The SSMLT recognizes that advancing technology and increasing responsibility requires technologists to continually update their knowledge and skills. Continuing professional education provides a mechanism to assure competence. The SSMLT Regulatory Bylaws require that all practicing MLTs complete mandatory Continuing Professional Education to maintain membership/licensure. It is the responsibility for each practicing MLT attend, track, and report their continuing education activity.

COMPLAINTS AND DISCIPLINE

The SSMLT reviews complaints from members of the public concerning licenced medical laboratory technologist practices. The SSMLT can impose disciplinary measures up to and including the removal of a member’s right to practice. For more information review the SSMLTs investigation and disciplines process.
